Democratic community treatment in mental health: theory, practices, and a parallel with ecomuseology

The article is an in-depth analysis of the author's speech given in Condeixa-a-Nova (Coimbra) in April 2024 for the 50th anniversary of the end of the dictatorship in Portugal. It examines his professional experience within three mental health services, both public and private, in Italy and Portugal, aimed at adolescents and young adults with psychiatric diagnoses and inspired by the democratic model. These services shared the goal of being inclusive, progressive, and open to the community and represented examples of good practice in the field, in contrast to the segregating model of the asylum/psychiatric hospital, where adequate support for patients in the day-after, i.e., after discharge from the service, is often lacking.
The article will provide a historical perspective on the democratic approach to mental health (to which Berne himself is no stranger), the possible points of convergence between this approach and Eco-Museology, and the author's reflective account of the services mentioned.
